Breaking news out of Chicago as the Blackhawks disclose that goaltender Laurent Brossoit has undergone a successful knee surgery.
The 31-year-old Brossoit, set to become Chicago's "goalie 1B" behind Petr Mrazek, had his right meniscus repaired at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the team announced. The procedure is routine and Brossoit will need five to seven weeks to recover, putting his return in early October.
The Blackhawks had never hinted Brossoit was hurt and it's unknown how he was injured. A torn meniscus is a common sports injury.
Brossoit, who has a history of nagging injuries suffers yet another unfortunate setback in arguably the most crucial time of his career. Brossoit was considered the top candidate for the starting goaltender position in Chicago, but will now undergo extensive knee rehabilitation to prepare himself for the regular season.
As it stands, Petr Mrazek will be the starting goaltender for the Hawks and Brossoit will need to fight for ice-time upon completion of his surgical rehabilitation.
