The Winnipeg Jets and the Washington Capitals almost pulled the trigger on a massive trade back in June.
The Winnipeg Jets general manager has been the subject of some heavy scrutiny during the NHL off season. Kevin Cheveldayoff finds himself in the crossfire once again as Ken Wiebe reveals yet another missed opportunity to pick up some high-end talent.
According to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press, the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets discussed a deal that involved McMichael at the end of June. The 23-year-old forward would sign a two-year extension with Washington just days later.
McMichael recorded 33 points (18g, 15a) in 80 games last season and was one of just four Capitals players to dress for at least 80 games. His bridge deal will see him remain under contract through the 2026-27 season and then be a restricted free agent again.
The trade would have made a lot of sense for the Jets as McMicheal is no stranger to the newly appointed bench bench boss Scott Arniel. McMicheal played under Scott Arniel during his rookie season in Washington where he found lots of success.
Although the NHL offseason is not over yet, theres still time for Kevin Cheveldayoff to make it happen. With top prospect Rutger McGroarty still in the trade conversation, fans may yet see a big move happen in the near future.
