The athletic recently posted an article breaking down several teams who will be receiving some much needed salary cap relief in 2025.
General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has been scrutinized heavily this offseason for the lack of UFA signings. Although Chevy was criticized, he only had roughly $13 million dollars in cap space to work with.
With that being said, Cheveldayoff managed to secure promising talent to bolster the Jets farm affiliate while avoiding to sign expensive free agents. Jets enthusiasts can breathe as sigh of relief as 2025 will provide some much needed cap space relief for the team. Here's what we can expect:
Right off the bat, Winnipeg will gain nearly $4 million because Blake Wheeler and Nate Schmidt's buyout charges will decrease. Neal Pionk's play has dipped and the expiry of his $5.875 million cap hit will be a welcome relief. The Jets have a whopping $42.7 million in projected cap space but that figure is a bit misleading.
The Winnipeg Jets still need to sign Cole Perfetti this offseason. Although there have been some rumours of Perfetti signing long-term, a bridge deal would prove to be the prudent decision in order to maximize their cap space heading into 2025.
