The latest rumour circulating around the NHL could come as a huge shock to Winnipeg jets fans.

As the highly anticipated NHL draft is just around the corner, many Jets enthusiasts are having mixed emotions about their odds on scooping up high end talent this year. Its no secret that the Winnipeg Jets sacrificed their pick in the first round to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Sean Monahan, but the Jets might still have some tricks up their sleeve.
Sources are speculating that top prospect Rutger McGroaty could be trade bait for the Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff this year. Although the notion of trading their top prospect is causing fans to raise their eyebrows, it could potentially be a viable option for Chevy to regain a top position in the draft.
In his sophomore season with the University of Michigan, he posted 16 goals and 52 points in 36 games, falling just one point shy of leading the team. He was selected by the Jets 14th overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, but now he could be on his way out of town. An option could be packaging McGroarty with Nikolaj Ehlers to maximize the return to make an impact for the 2024-25 season.
Although this option poses a lot of risk for the Winnipeg Jets, it could lead to a blockbuster trade that could very well work out in the Jets favour. Should the Jets consider trading their top prospect in a package deal that includes Nikolaj Ehlers?
