A new report has surfaced revealing that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has a better salary than more than any player in the league.

Despite the significant responsibilities, it might surprise many that commissioners could earn more than the athletes who drive fan interest and viewership. However, the report shows this might be the case for Gary Bettman.
In the 2013-14 season, Bettman earned $8.8 million in salary and benefits, slightly less than the highest-paid player, Shea Weber, who made around $14 million annually. Fast forward to 2024, and sources estimate that Bettman's current salary exceeds $15 million annually, based on general salary increases and his net worth, which is around $39 million.

If accurate, Bettman's salary surpasses only one NHL player, Nathan MacKinnon, who earns $16.5 million annually. This disparity suggests that stars like Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Connor McDavid may be underpaid relative to their commissioner.
Transparency about Bettman's salary could fuel discussions about player compensation, but the league and ownership are likely to keep such details confidential to maintain control over player salaries.
