Another huge potential trade has surfaced regarding Winnipeg Jets top prospect Rutger McGroarty and the Montreal Canadiens.
Rutger McGroarty, 20, has been the centre of attention the last few weeks as Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was rumoured to be moving McGroarty at the 2024 NHL draft in Las Vegas, but ultimately held off as he continues to shop around.
The latest buzz surrounding McGroarty comes out of Montreal, as the Habs seem extremely interested in making a deal happen with the Jets. Sportsnet hockey insider Eric Engel reports that he sees a fit in Montreal and hints that something big could soon be happening.
The Canadiens have several assets that could pique Winnipeg's interest. Defenseman Justin Barron, a former first-round pick, could be a valuable piece in any potential deal. Other young prospects or draft picks could also sweeten the pot.
Although the Jets missed their opportunity to steal their way into the first round of the 2024 NHL draft, perhaps a trade for Habs defenceman Justin Barron and an additional 2025 first round pick is the prime deal GM Cheveldayoff has been waiting for.
Justin Barron split his time between the Laval Rocket and the Habs last year, but in 48 regular season NHL games, Barron notched 7 goals and 6 assists and was a -3 rating on the ice.
