As the Toronto Maple Leafs come off another massively disappointing season, the headlines turn to captain John Tavares.
As the Leafs work through the off-season to strategically put together a Stanley Cup-winning team, John Tavares, 33, is now at risk of losing his Toronto Maple Leafs captaincy to Auston Matthews.
The rumours are circulating about the threat of Tavares losing his captaincy due his lack of leadership through pivotal moments of the Leafs seasons. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been plagued by gut wrenching losses through the course of Tavares tenure as team captain.
Now, heads turn to Auston Matthews as Sportsnet hockey insider Nick Kypreos announces that the Leafs organization is considering stripping the "C" off Tavares to promote alternate captain Auston Matthews.
Nick Kypreos on SN discussing the Leafs potentially stripping the 'C' from Tavares:
'From what I'm hearing, the Leafs are contemplating taking the captaincy away from him and giving it to Auston. They will talk about it. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it's real.'"
Although nothing has been confirmed, the need for a culture shift in Toronto is apparent. Perhaps a change of leadership is the required dosage of medicine to finally bring the Stanley Cup back to Leafs Nation.
