Jets enthusiasts are wondering who will get the backup goalie position behind Vezina winning Connor Hellebuyck ahead of the NHL regular season.
The Winnipeg Jets fanbase have a lot of unanswered questions this NHL offseason. Despite the looming concerns over the organization, one of the biggest questions that come to mind is who will get the backup job?
The Jets received a massive blow after losing their former backup Laurent Brossoit to Chicago during free agency. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff did his best to find a suitable replacement for Brossoit, signing Eric Comrie and Kaapo Kahkonen.
Both players have their strengths and weaknesses. Neither goaltender put up great numbers last season, though to be fair, neither of them were on exceptionally skilled teams (Comrie spent the year with the Buffalo Sabres while Kahkonen played for the New Jersey Devils and the last-place San Jose Sharks).
Having previously been part of the Jets organization, Comrie has familiarity on his side, both with Hellebuyck and the coaching staff. On the other hand, Kahkonen has marginally better numbers at a younger age than Comrie.
The Jets also have a unlikely third option in Thomas Milic with the Manitoba Moose. If the Comrie and Kahkonen both fail to generate relief for Hellebuyck, fans can anticipate Milic getting a well deserved opportunity.
Although it appears like the upper hand is currently with Kahkonen, the game-changing decision will ultimately come down to individual performances during the NHL preseason.
