This one is a long shot, but the boys at the Hockey Writers have pitched a wild trade idea that would alter the course of the Jets franchise.
Mitch Marner has been the center of attention during the course of the NHL offseason. But coming right behind the Marner buzz comes all the trade rumours surrounding Jets top prospect Rutger McGroarty and their beloved Danish forward Nikolaj Ehlers.
The three centerpieces of the deal would be Mitch Marner leaving Toronto and going to Winnipeg. On the other side, Nikolaj Ehlers and Rutger McGroarty would be the pieces coming back to Toronto.
As it stands, the Winnipeg Jets have room in their cap space to make this potential trade work. On the other hand, the Leafs get a proven top 6 veteran and a top 100 ranked NHL prospect.
A Toronto trade with Winnipeg has the potential to be a huge blockbuster, but it's certainly anything but a given these two teams could make it work and shuffle all the pieces together to make everyone happy.
Could we potentially see GM's Kevin Cheveldayoff and Brad Treliving start working out a trade that would send shockwaves down the NHL? Only time will tell.
