The Winnipeg Jets find themselves in a exciting position regarding their new top defensive prospect Alfons Freij.
The Swedish prospect was selected by GM Kevin Cheveldayoff 37th overall in the 2024 NHL entry draft in Las Vegas. Many fans are beginning to wonder what we can expect from the young prospect moving forward.
It will be a telling sign in terms of Freij's development as it will his first season playing in a non-junior league with Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan. He likely won't get a chance at the main roster for two or even three years as he continues to grow from his current 6-foot-1, 196 pound build that makes him an eye-catching prospect.
Theres an added bit of conversation that may be added to the mix regarding Freij's development.
If GM Cheveldayoff manages to sign in to an entry level contract in the coming weeks, Friej will be elligible to head to the AHL to play for the Moose after his season playing in HockeyAllsvenskan for some additional development.
Despite the projections of Freij not making the Jets roster for the next few seasons, fans can remain hopeful that his development within the organization will go smoothly if Cheveldayoff plays his cards right.
