Kaapo Khakonen has emerged as the front runner to take the backup position behind Connor Hellebuyck.

Although Kahkonen is currently the favourite, it wont be an easy road for the new Jets goaltender. There is fierce competition developing ahead of the highly anticipated NHL preseason, and current teammate Marc Comrie might be the biggest road block for Kahkonen.
Comrie is a familiar face to Jets fans, spending years in the organization before going to the Buffalo Sabres two seasons ago. He was Hellebuyck's backup in a very limited sense in 2021-22 before, and that brings a level of familiarity to the crease

That said, Comrie has struggled mightily with the Sabres, and it's questionable if he's ready to step into another important backup role. In terms of recent performance, it appears that Kahkonen has the upper hand and Comrie may be relegated to a depth role.

Although the battle between Comrie and Kahkonen for the backup roster spot will be fierce, its important to consider another prime candidate. Thomas Milic has been posting some impressive numbers for the Manitoba Moose and is also looking for an NHL opportunity.
Scott Arniel and the Jets coaching staff will be playing close attention to their goaltending prospects ahead of the NHL season. Although Kahkonen has emerged as the front runner, he will have his work cut out for him as it will ultimately come down to the best individual performances.
