With the NHL offseason finally starting to slow down a bit, Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff gets an opportunity to reflect on his strategy.

Might the same thing happen on Monday with Alfons Friej? Before Elias the Jets had never signed a 2nd round pick so quickly. But there are some benefits to doing so.

Alfons Freij is now the top defensive prospect on the Winnipeg Jets. Freij was selected in the second round of the 2024 NHL draft at 37th overall.
Sources are starting to have the conversation regarding the benefit to signing Alfons Freij to an entry level contract as soon as possible. They did it last year with Jets prospect Elias Salamonsson, and it came with significant perks.
The ELC would most likley end up sliding twice which lowers the cap hit on the player if he should make the NHL roster while on his ELC. Also as we learned with Elias last year it would make Alfons AHL eligible next season.

With having Alfons signed to an ELC, it would qualify him to play in the AHL after his pro season in Sweden ends, only expediting his development. Signing Freij early also lowers his cap hit if he were to make the Jets roster on an entry level contract.
