Breaking news out of San Jose as Sharks forward Alexander Barabanov announces he signed a contract in the KHL.
Barabanov began his NHL journey in the 2020-21 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, appearing in 13 games before being traded to the Sharks. Over four seasons with San Jose, he scored 106 points. His return to the KHL marks a continuation of a trend where Russian-born NHL players eventually head back to the KHL after stints in North America.
During the 2024 NHL trade deadline, Alexander Barabanov expressed his desire to traded to Sharks management, but nothing came to fruition. Despite not being moved, Alexander Barabanov reportedly gathered interest from a few different NHL teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Seemingly uninterested to continue his NHL career in a bottom feeder organization, Alexander Barabanov decided to hang up his skates in North America and is heading back to his home land of Russia.
Alexander Barabanov has decided to leave the NHL and sign a two-year deal with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL, according to his agent, Yuri Nikolaev.
