Theres been some debate as of late regarding the Winnipeg Jets nationality preference concerning their NHL draft picks.

Connor Hellebuyck is American signed long term, Kyle Connor is American signed long term, enough of this only draft Manitobans/Canadians nonsense lol

In 2022, Kevin Cheveldayoff was aked about wether the organization drafts enough Canadian/ Manitoba prospects and had this to say:
«We've never really looked at the region or the logistics of where a player is from,»

Although Chevy disregarded the question, there seems to be a trend in Jets Nation when discussing their NHL draft strategies. When analyzing the trend, there is no doubt that GM Kevin Cheveldayoff doesn't hesitate to gamble on American born hockey players.
But in Cheveldayoff's defence, some of the most talented players on the team are US born athletes, including two time Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck and scoring ace Kyle Connor. Winnipeg Jets reporter Mike McIntyre has a different take on the argument:
Colour me confused by the fact the Jets have made no secret of their fondness for made-in-Minnesota products. They've surrounded former captain Blake Wheeler in recent years with the likes of Neal Pionk (trade), Nate Schmidt (trade), Dominic Toninato (free agency) and Dylan Samberg (draft)

They say home is where the heart is, but that's certainly not the case for the local NHL team.

But the argument that the Winnipeg Jets prefer American talent over Canadian is still relevant. Some of the best players in Jets 2.0 have been American born, but the discussion for bringing in more local talent remains a focal point.
