Don L, a statistcal NHL guru on X (formally known as twitter) has recently ranked Mark Scheifele's contract the 6th worst in the NHL.
Mark Scheifele's contract comes in as the 6th worst in the NHL according to Dom L's model
This stat comes as somewhat of a big shock for Jets enthusiasts. When assessing his play on the ice, theres no doubt that Mark Scheifele is worth every penny of his $8.5 million dollar contract.
On the other hand, the criticism is in large focused on Scheifele being a defensive liability. Scheifele has been the subject of recent conversation due to his age and his overall play not improving.
The bigger issues though are his age and, as usual, his defensive ability. Scheifele gives a lot back the other way while facing secondary matchups which makes his scoring feel empty calorie. At 31, things are probably not going to get better for Scheifele and the Jets going forward either.
The 31 year old was a -11 rating on the ice last season for the Winnipeg Jets. Tidying up is overall play without the puck will be a focal point for the long time Jet veteran heading into next season.
