As we await the debut of the highly anticipated 2024-2025 NHL season, we take a look back at Teemu Selane's legendary rookie season.
The Winnipeg Jets legend was selected 10th overall in the 1988 NHL entry draft. The Jets ultimately felt like Selanne needed some time to develop, so he went back to Finland before making the jump to the NHL in 1992-1993 season.
That year was a historic year for the Winnipeg Jets as the coveted #13 Finish rookie lead the team in offence and allowed the Jets to secure a playoff berth that season. That season, Selanne also posted 132 points which has remained an unbroken record in the NHL.
It was as if Selanne couldn't make a mistake with the puck: that season, he burned out the red lights with 76 goals, and added 56 assists for good measure, totalling 132 points in 84 games.
Selanne played a total of 4 seasons in Winnipeg before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 1996. It was no doubt a devastating loss that was comparable to Gretzky leaving the Oilers for the Kings, but it does not take away the fact that Selanne was arguably one the best players to ever play for the Winnipeg Jets.
Selanne retired after the 2013-14 season and by that time the ageless wonder had skated in 1451 games for the Jets, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim/Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, and Colorado Avalanche and recorded 684 goals — 12th all-time and the most among Finnish players — and 1457 points.
