Theres a lot of tension building up between the Winnipeg Jets and their top prospect Rutger McGroarty.
McGroarty, who was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets 14th overall in the 2022 NHL draft is the latest name to be circulating around the trade rumour mill. Sources have confirmed that McGroarty is no longer interested in pursuing his highly anticipated NHL debut next season and has opted out to play another year for the University of Michigan instead.
«We made it very open to him at the onset that we were more than willing to sign him, more than willing to turn him pro. But in the same token, we need him to make that decision for what he feels is best for his development, I think Rutger is looking for an even bigger role where he can help lead a team to greatness and help his development there.» Cheveldayoff said in May.
The Jets currently do not hold a first round pick this year ahead of the 2024 NHL draft. Those rights now belong to the Montreal Canadiens as result of a blockbuster trade involving forward Sean Monahan last season. So what does this mean for the McGroarty and the Winnipeg Jets?
Its looking like a trade will be imminent in the coming weeks as sources have linked multiple teams expressing a serious interest in acquiring the Jets top prospect. Among the top candidates are the Chicago Blackhawks who seem open to trading away their 2024 first round pick in exchange for McGroarty's services. Should Winnipeg do it?
