The Florida Panthers are Stanley cup champions after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 2-1.
The thrilling victory comes as the first ever title for the Panthers, as well as the first ever Stanley Cup for former Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice. In a classy display, the former Jets head coach had some heartfelt words for his former organization.
"Well, I'm just lucky," Maurice said, and then after the briefest of pauses, he added "If I could have one more thing, it's for the Winnipeg Jets to win the Stanley Cup."
This message has created quite the buzz for Winnipeg Jets fans as this moment cemented a level of mutual respect between the former Jets bench boss and his old hockey club.
Maurice has coached 1,985 games in his career, with 939 wins. He also owns the Jets' franchise record for games coached at 600 and wins at 315.
