Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin expresses a desire to play in the 2026 Winter Olympics, but huge uncertainties are lingering.

Its no secret that the Russians have been banned from most major sports competitions due to their conflict with the Ukraine. Despite the ban, Alexander still feels a compelling desire to participate in the Olympics as this might be his last opportunity to do so.
Alex Ovechkin had this to say during a recent interview when asked about potentially participating in the prestigious winter olympic games:

«In theory, yes, but you see what is happening with our team now. They are not allowing us to participate in the World Championships or the Olympics, so I don't know how this will all happen.»

The next scheduled meeting to determine Russia and Belarus's eligibility for the 2025-26 season is set for May of next year. The NHL will participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy so the IIHF's 2025 decision will play a large role in determining whether or not Ovechkin plays for an Olympic medal again during the final year on his NHL contract with the Washington Capitals.

Although it would be nice to see Alexander Ovechkin compete at the international stage during the twilight of his career, the odds are highly unlikely.
