Former Hockey Night in Canada commentator Jim Hughson opens up about the challenging aspects of calling Toronto Maple Leafs games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs hockey market is arguably one of the most cut-throat franchises in sports. The Leafs have the largest demographic of fans in Canada and have expectations to be great on a yearly basis.
Despite the glory that comes from playing in Toronto, the media aspect is a whole different ballgame. Jim Hughson, a legendary former commentator for Hockey Night in Canada discusses some his personal struggles calling games for the Toronto faithful.
«Local people didn't think I was a big enough fan,» Hughson said. «When I broadcasted the Maple Leafs, one of the downsides of having the top chair on Hockey Night in Canada is basically you become a Toronto Maple Leafs broadcaster. Everybody in a local fanbase expects their broadcasters to be like the it's a hard one to win.»
For the most part, commentators in Canada try to remain neutral as broadcasts are typically featured nation wide. Jim Hughson struggled to find the balance between being a Maple Leafs "homer" and nationwide broadcaster.
And that's the problem you get when you're broadcasting on the national level out of Toronto. They want a local broadcast but at the same time, the broadcasters are broadcasting to every corner of the province. You might be broadcasting a game where the New York Islanders are playing and the young men who play for the Islanders are from all different parts of Canada as well.

One can understand the pressures surrounding catering to Maple Leafs fans. Overall, Jim Hughson was a class act and a cherished part of Canadian ice hockey throughout the country.
