The latest headlines out of the NHL involve the Florida Panthers signing former Winnipeg Jets defenceman Nate Schmidt.

The deal is 1 year stint worth $800,000. AAV to play with the reigning Stanley Cup champions. This is very much a make or break year for Schmidt, 32, who needs to get his game going, specifically on offence.
Following a Winnipeg buyout that occurred during the initial stages of the NHL off-season, Nate Schmidt has found a new home with the Florida Panthers and will be playing under his former head coach in Winnipeg Paul Maurice.
Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli reports that multiple teams had expressed interest in signing Schmidt, but he ultimately wanted to play for his former head coach which resulted in a substantial pay cut.
Schmidt, 32, had the final season of his six-year contract, which carried an average annual value (AAV) of $5.95, bought out by Winnipeg earlier this summer.
