As we approach the 2024 NHL draft, we look at a potential buy out scenerio regarding Winnipeg Jets defenceman Nate Shmidt.

Lots of debate has sparked around Nate Shmidt with sources speculating that he's asset not worth keeping for the Winnipeg Jets. Hockey enthusiasts have been critical over general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff's decision to bring him in in the first place, as his monstrous contact is preventing key acquisitions heading into the off-season.
His regular season stats included 2 goals and 12 assists for 14 points in 63 games played. It's safe to say that your $5.95M AAV 3rd pair defenseman who is in and out of the lineup does not look very good from a general manager's standpoint.

So what would a potential buyout look like for the Winnipeg Jets. If Kevin Cheveldayoff were to pull the trigger, it would free up over $3 million dollars in cap space allowing the Jets to shop around for a more suitable player.
Buying out Nate Shmidt is a viable option for the Jets as they could look to bring in proven veteran defenders such as Stanley Cup winning Brandon Montour. Other notable players Kevin Cheveldayoff could hunt down are Brett Pesce and Brady Skjei.
