The buzz regarding Jets top prospect continues today ahead of the 2024 NHL draft.
Sources have confirmed that Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has indeed been working the phones, but he's waiting for the right moment to strike.
According to a reputable hockey insider, the Winnipeg Jets received some bites from other NHL teams regarding top prospect Rutger McGroarty. A first round pick from the the Minnesota Wild was even added to the mix to sweeten the deal, but GM Kevin Cheveldayoff ultimately stood firm.
According to The Athletic's Michael Russo, Minnesota offered Winnipeg the 13th pick but changed its tack when Zeev Buium became available, trading up to take the defenceman at 12. We don't know the Jets' draft list: It's possible that making the deal with the Wild depended on which player Winnipeg could have drafted at 13.
According to Jets insider Murat Ates, more interest came Winnipeg's way throughout the course of the first round, but it appears GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is remaining put on McGroarty until the prized offer he's looking for comes his way. Cheveldayoff had this to say:
«The Rutger situation here right now I think for me, there's a time and a place when I'll comment on something,» Cheveldayoff said in response to a question from The Athletic. «Rutger is a prospect within our organization and that's where it's at right now.»
