Massive news out of Winnipeg as the Winnipeg Jets have placed Defenceman Nate Schmidt on unconditional waivers for purpose of a buyout.

The 32 year old defenceman is entering the last year of his 6 year monstrous contract with a $5.9 million dollar cap hit. Schmidt was scooped up by the Jets from the Vancouver Canucks in July of 2021 for a draft pick.
Unfortunately, it's looking like Nate Schmidt is on his way out of Winnipeg very soon. Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is poised to buy him out with the purpose of providing some much needed cap space relief to the Jets organization. The buy out should provide over $2.7 in relief this year including a $1.6 million cap hit in 2025-26.
Schmidt started last season in the Jets' top six but was eventually pushed out of the lineup towards the end of the season. He never really lived up to his $5.9 million contract when it came to offense. This past season, he only scored two goals and 14 points in 63 games. During his time with the Jets, Schmidt played 211 games, scored 13 goals, and amassed 43 points. This was his worst year offensively.

There's a chance he may be picked up on waivers by a team looking to bolster their defence this upcoming season. Although, it remains unlikely as his play was inconsistent throughout his entire campaign with the Jets.
It's looking like a near future buyout is imminent as the Jets are keen to part ways with the American defenceman.
